pushing limits, falling in love with friends and self-discovery with bella amor

It’s been a minute since I was on the hunt for up-and-coming artists to feature on Unraveled, but as soon as I heard her voice, I knew I had to interview her. bella amor is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from the Gold Coast, with her powerful vocals, bubbly charm and honesty through her lyrics, amor has caught attention across the nation for her incredible work.

Just coming back from her five back-to-back performances at Big Sound, amor reflects on how valuable her time was there. Being able to play with her band consistently for five consecutive shows and spending more time with them allowed her to realise how vital it is to “play with a band” as she noticed the “level of connection” the band had with her music and vice versa making “a better stage presence than there would be if everyone didn’t love the music they were performing”. Amor also came to realise her capabilities more than ever, with five back-to-back shows testing her limits and being able to come out of it on the other side stronger than ever.

To add to the excitement of amor’s current agenda, the singer/songwriter released her new single ‘play the part’ recently, explaining how the song is about falling in love with a best friend who wasn’t quite on the same page. Despite this hurt, Amor didn’t let the friendship fall apart, if anything, her love for the person was so strong that she wouldn’t let a moment of hurt get in the way.

Writing this took place a little later in Sydney when things weren’t very easy for Amor, and thinking about her friendship with them and the strength of the connection they have was quite the release for Amor. Coming out of the song, I asked bella if she had any advice for her listeners going through the same situation “If it’s gonna work out, it will work out and you ultimately have the decision to wait for that person or if you want to find someone ready for you now.” and “even if it feels like everything at the moment, it will pass as time goes on”.

Accompanying the single was the music video, set in various ‘street’ locations, amor is captured celebrating her love for “performing and making things up as (she) goes”. Don’t worry, amor didn’t fail to leave an intentional notion of the relationship with her friend. One of the scenes in a tunnel, signifying the state of the relationship at the time of the song is “Water under the bridge”. I’ll let the fans spot the rest ;)

Since her career has been set on an upward trajectory following releases of hits ‘heart attack’, ‘sentimental’ and ‘does it get boring’, amor shares how her “whole view on music and what it meant to me has gotten so much deeper” As she understands her creativity and the process behind it more, Amor aims to explore other genres that allow her lyrics and voice to reach a deeper level than ever before.

In discussing change, Amor and I got into a rabbit hole of discussing how someone finds their sound and if that is ever possible. Even though we didn’t get to a conclusion (I don’t think we ever will), Amor shares advice she received from someone saying “The constant is you, no matter what you’re doing, you as a person, your voice and your instrument is what keeps people coming back to you”.

As Amor discusses her aspiration to look into different music, she shares how “bedroom rock/pop, teen-adult angst” music is a big contributor to her playlists right now, featuring Slow Pulp, “old school” Beabadoobee and Avril Lavigne - to be honest I couldn’t think of a better combo. Could this be an insight into future bella amor music?

Even though we couldn’t discuss what exactly we can expect from amor with her new music, I know that whatever it is, it’s going to be better than ever. Make sure you listen to her new single ‘play the part’ here and keep up to date with her socials here.
