A Q&A with Blusher

Hey, how are you guys? Thank you for taking the time to chat with Unraveled today.

Thanks so much for having us <3

‘24 Hours in Paris’ is an intro into the new era for Blusher, can you share some insight into what this track is about?

It’s a bittersweet song that romanticizes being sad in a beautiful place. We had booked a show in Paris, but there was a chance we would only be there for 24 hours and then have to fly back to Australia. The drama of it all reminded us of when you take a trip to get over your ex and end up sitting in a gutter crying into a baguette. - Jade

The writing process started around the live bass line, and samples of our vocals. It was really satisfying to explore this other shade of the Blusher palette, and releasing it after ‘Accelerator’ felt like an interesting left turn to us. We want people to come on the journey with us through a really wide range of influences and emotions, and we want to challenge ourselves to always be doing something new and maybe unexpected. - Miranda

You’ve also just released a remix of ‘24 Hours in Paris - Miranda’s Version’ which is a much more upbeat version of the original - what was the reason behind this take?

The remixes I tend to love the most are the ones that do something quite different from the original - I feel like it’s a great opportunity to get creative and reimagine the world in which the song exists. Personally, I’m inspired by a lot of quite chaotic, fast dance music. I kind of thought that if I was going to remix our slowest and most emotional song, I might as well take it to the opposite extreme. I didn’t really know what I was going to do before I started, it felt like I put my headphones on and then woke up 3 hours later having totally recontextualized the song. I wanted to stay true to the bittersweet, angsty energy of the original, which reflects the ‘sadness’ phase of grieving a breakup - the remix is for the ‘having a huge, chaotic night on the dance floor’ stage that comes straight after. - Miranda

Each of you remix your songs into individual versions of the track, how did this come about?

We’ve been spending a lot of time in airports and vans and trains lately and just started remixing our own songs out of curiosity and boredom. Production is something we all love to do in our spare time, it’s been really fun to show our individual personalities in these remixes. -  Lauren

‘Rave Angel’ and ‘Accelerator’ are also great tracks that you released this year, can you tell us about those a bit more?

Both of those songs were written in LA on big caffeine highs (which you can really hear). We had so much fun playing with brash lyrics and turbo synth sounds. Both of those songs feel like the perfect balance of dreaminess and chaos. - Jade

‘Overglow’ is such a great upbeat hit, can you give me insight into what this track is about?

We wanted to bottle the feeling of your first crush. It’s about when you become glowy and effervescent around a person and think you might explode and throw up all at once. We tried to invent a word for that state - which was ‘Overglow’. One of our favourite moments in the song is the big euphoric bridge, which we worked on with the genius mind of Lucy Blomkamp. That section is what a crush sounds like to us. - Jade

‘Overglow’ is about to come out this week, and I can’t help but draw parallels to the likes of Charli XCX, who were some of the big influences with your new music?

Charli’s amazing. Overglow started with just us in the studio, and between the three of us, our references are super eclectic. From memory, we were referencing an Artemas song for the bass tone, K-pop for the harmonies and the energy, some niche hyperpop for the explosive end section, and maybe Shakespeare in the fact that we invented our own word. - Miranda

Throughout your career, you’ve already supported big names including Tove Lo, Aurora and The Rions, what has this been like? Do you have any favourite memories so far?

We are so obsessed with everyone we’ve toured with, it’s honestly so hard to keep our cool around these people. Partying backstage with Tove Lo is definitely a highlight. - Lauren

You just performed at London Pride and are about to appear at BST Hyde Park headlined by Kylie Minogue, with your headline show to top it all off. What are you most excited about with these sets?

We’re testing out a bunch of unreleased songs at these shows which we’re so excited about. Our live show is a vital part of the Blusher universe, so experiencing what a song feels like live really helps us decide what we want to release next. The fact that we’re playing our first-ever headline show is a little bit nerve-wracking but also so inspiring. The fact that it’s in London and it’s sold out is insane! We’re excited to party hard and to connect with people face-to-face, it's one of the most satisfying parts of making music. - Miranda

You’re all very talented musicians individually and as a group, can you share how Blusher came about?

We were each solo artists in Australia and knew of each other through shows and the music scene. One day we got together just to hang out and make some fun hot girl pop as a side project, we ended up writing our debut single Soflty Spoken that day and the rest is history. . - Lauren

Blusher is all about ‘hot girl pop’ can you share some of your favourite pop icons at the moment?

It feels like an exciting time in pop music where people are craving artists with edge and depth. Chappell Roan is saving pop with how unapologetic, raw, and magnetic she is. We also just saw Troye Sivan live in London (where Charli got up as a special guest!!) and that was the most fun, sweaty pop show we have been to… maybe ever. - Jade

You released your debut EP ‘Should we Go Dance?’ Just last year. Described to be the ultimate night out with hits including ‘Backbone’ and ‘Dead End’, can we expect more of this in the new era of Blusher?

Absolutely. This new era of blusher features nights out that are even messier, brighter, longer, and more chaotic. - Lauren

If you could describe Blusher in 3 words to someone who has never heard your music before, what would they be?

Sparkly, gritty, pop. - Lauren

Overglow is out on July 17! Make sure to keep up with Blusher on their socials and snatch a ticket to their Australia tour later this year.
