GOODFRND and being in love

I am very honoured to be able to introduce you to the new up-and-coming singer/songwriter/legend GOODFRND. The alternative-pop artist based in Australia had a chat with us to give us the goss on his brand new single ‘I feel in love’ out now.

GOODFRND only just released their debut single ‘Lipstick’ earlier this year which got a strong positive response from listeners across the country. He reflects on how there has been ‘a new wave of motivation to keep going’ since the release of ‘Lipstick’. Without too many expectations leading up to the release,  ‘GOODFRND’ is taking baby steps into finding his sound which can be hinted at through the single.

Now we’re on the new release train with ‘I feel in love’ which I got to chat to GOODFRND about before the release. ‘I feel in love’ was a project that was worked on across three years. This all began at the beginning of lockdown when he and producer Sam Harper were doing Zoom sessions until GOODFRND moved to Byron. The project was picked up and finished over a year later by his other producer Agnes. ‘I feel in love’ then went on to his friend Matty where guitar and saxophone solos were incorporated. In summary, the ingredients needed to make the perfect recipe for GOODFRND’s sound.

The song still resonates with GOODFRND today about ‘someone I really care about’ as he smiles at the camera. The lyrics for ‘I feel in love’ were written by accident a after playing with some chords which makes the song a whole lot more exciting for GOODFRND.

With only a small discography so far, I asked GOODFRND to sum up his music in three words which he answered with ‘raw, fun and sad’. ‘I feel in love’ is more on the fun side as “it’s happy, euphoric and full of love! I usually write sad songs, so this is something different for me.” This also comes from the influences of The 1975 which GOODFRND has spent a whole lot of time listening to growing up - “I remember seeing The 1975 ten years ago at the Hordern Pavillion.. They had such a new sound at the time - the fact that they’re still making good music is incredible”.  Another key influence is Jeremy Zucker with his authentic songwriting, as GOODFRND aims to do the same, “as someone who appreciates music and believes that there is no point in being a musician if there isn’t ‘authenticity in their writing” which he points out.

The musician surely made the impression that he knew what he wanted out of this musical journey so far, so I asked him what he had planned for the future. GOODFRND explains how although ‘I am definitely in the pop genre at the moment, I would like to expand my sound into further genres’. You can also expect a lot of songs from GOODFRND this year with the plan to ‘release every couple of months’ and to do some live shows as well. GOODFRND doesn’t fail to mention that he likes to be precise with his gigs as he wants to be perceived for who he is as an artist. Instead of performing anywhere and everywhere, GOODFRND likes to curate where he performs so he plays his music to the right audiences.

If the incredible knowledge, sound, and artistic vision that GOODFRND has doesn’t convince you, then I don't know what will. The artist has so much going for him and I can’t wait to see how his art continues to grow and be loved by supporters across the globe. Make sure you listen to ‘I feel in love’ which is out now on all streaming platforms.
