Analysis Paralysis by MAY-A: A Review

It’s the start of a new September season, and what better way to kick off a new EP - “Analysis Paralysis” by everyone’s favourite headline Australian artist MAY-A. One of the most influential rising artists who has worked with international music sensations 5 Seconds Of Summer, Flume and Wallows, MAY-A continues to be a leading force in the music industry since her debut EP “Don’t Kiss Ur Friends” back in 2021.

MAY-A’s artistry is defined to be fascinating, experimental and ever-flowing. Focusing on a play of euphoric sounds and sentimental lyrics, she has constantly pursued a path of embracing the light and darkness in the way she writes her music. Analysis Paralysis is set to embark on a very similar journey from her first-ever breakout single ‘Apricots’, working through the musical ponderings and fascinations of her journey as an artist.

Her first track on this latest EP ‘Something Familiar’ incorporates the ebbs and flows of her experimentation with both singing and rapping in an indie-rock soundscape. She falls deep into her emotions and feelings as she expresses anger and frustration, leaving an intimate point of view in the eyes of MAY-A.

She captures you into her world with a reflection of what it’s like not being able to kick past a relationship. Balancing the highs and lows through her track ‘Sweat You Out My System’, we witness a sweeter touch to her musicality and voice. Embracing strength from her former flame within and embracing the nostalgia that she has lived to her audience.

But she comes back with an edge, her honesty and her self-deprecating tonalities as she writes out an anthem for those who have been blinded or lost with love. ‘Your Funeral’ reminds us of how MAY-A is a fighter when it comes to love and her evolution as an artist. Leaving her impactful words “If you really think that we’re suitable, then that’s your funeral.”

MAY-A slows it down to a more patient and graceful world through her track ‘LOLA’. Expresses her thoughts of confusion, helplessness, hurt and rejection, Singing about her past self-contained relationships that she has fought through as a person. It is until this part of her EP that I see MAY-A at her most vulnerable and honest self, admiring the transparency she creates between herself as an artist and as a person.

Through her emotional journey and acknowledgement of what it’s like to be loved and lost, her last songs ‘ifyoulikeitlikethat’, ‘Guilty Conscience’ and ‘SUPERIOR LIAR’ reflect on her hard-hitting emotive vocals that acknowledge all the trauma that she has endured. You are bound to feel it in her voice, in the way some parts of the songs are just instilled with silence and closure of soft ballads as she closes the story of her sentimental EP.

Analysis Paralysis binds you into the world of MAY-A like no other artist you’ll ever hear. With an all-female band and immense support from her loved ones from Australia and abroad, we hope this 21-year-old artist continues making her mark across the globe.
