Where The Streets Know Her Name - An Insight into the World of Mozë
Since playing at her first post-lockdown house party in the streets of Brunswick, neo-soul pop artist ‘Mozë’ has released her latest funk hit, ‘Albert St.’. With her latest release being featured on Triple J Unearthed and MTV, Mozë is a musician who is known for collaboration, innovation and enlightening the world with her music.
‘Albert St.’ comes from a sweet story of her housemates having a party post-lockdown. But this wasn't like any other party, a stage was set and posters of musicians including Mozë had been put up on the surrounding walls. Mozë wrote a song from the inspiration of a combination including icon Kylie Minogue, early 2000’s hits and the feeling of a summer breeze. It was a very spontaneous time of joy, happiness and excitement among all as ‘Albert St.’ was officially debuted that very night.
Having finished this song after a year in the making, Mozë has felt an overall sense of relief. To be able to breathe and let the world enjoy her music, for any musician this is their ideal state to be in. She is happy with what she has accomplished and is excited to see where her journey continues.
In comparison to writing this song based on the bustling and upbeat streets of Brunswick, Mozë comes from a small town called Peechelba with a population of only 300 people. I was keen to know if she would ever write a song based on a street back at home. She mentioned how “We could expect a folk, slow ballad hit as the atmosphere in Wangaratta vs her new suburb of Brunswick is very different. The ode to her hometown is going to be named after one of Wangaratta's streets also known as Yarrawonga Rd.”
When exploring the world of Mozë, it was evident that she has supported various artists over the past year. Odette, Woodes and IVEY are just a few to name and I was keen to ask about her collaborative journey as a musician. She talks about these experiences being very valuable which have helped her gain confidence in herself as a musician. Mozë expresses, “You meet people who support and understand what it’s like to be in the music world, which gives you hope and trust in yourself to keep going after what you want to do in the world.”.
Mozë's progression as an artist since coming from regional Victoria (aka Wangaratta) is rather incredible. With her story so far, I wanted to know if she had any special words for others who are embarking on a similar path to Mozë. Her best advice was “To be open to all opportunities and to throw yourself into a lot of situations. Be careful of what you choose to do but don’t be afraid of what’s to come. You continue to learn and grow from experiences, which only make you a better person/musician in the long run.”.
As a listener, we are excited for Mozë to continue to share a new and innovative sound that filters through her soul and perspective. I think I can speak on behalf of everyone reading that if Mozë continues to put out great work, she will be a household name before we know it.
