SUCK by COBRAH a Review
There’s a time and a place for subtlety, and in the new, hyper-sexual world that COBRAH is ushering in, none will be required. Hot off a string of boundary-pushing releases, the up-and-coming Swede’s newest single, SUCK, pulls no punches and makes sure her statement of intent is clear from the word “go”. Or, in this case, the opening lyric, “suck”.
You won’t be left in any doubt as to COBRAH’s mission - a weaponised, almost violent reclaiming of female sexuality. By the standards of the contemporary sexual revolution, this is about as brazen and unapologetic as it gets - even the 2020 benchmark WAP is comparatively tame. And just like the former, expect this song to be an international club staple by the end of this review.
Production-wise there is little to deconstruct, but sometimes that’s all you need. If what you want to do is create a triple threat of challenging social taboo, staking your claim for a new breed of feminism and acting as a guaranteed aphrodisiac in nightclubs the world over, then the blueprint that SUCK follows is note-perfect. Look no further. In fact, with an engineered bass that has explosive power not seen since the Soviet nuclear program, it’ll be hard to look anywhere else. Happily, as a result, there’s a surprise new demographic this song will reach; those in charge of EQ-testing subwoofers. Sound technicians in venues everywhere will get to see if they’ve got the equipment to handle COBRAH’s release (and yes, the innuendo was deliberate).
To complement the thumping bass, COBRAH virtually purrs her lines in a way that gets in your ears, giving the feeling that someone is going to have to be restrained by the end of the song, and all bets are off as to who it will be. It was a confessed means of just having fun with the music, in the words of COBRAH themselves, and it’s evident across the corset-tight duration of the song. It smoothly follows the mould of the preceding releases, which suggests bigger, bolder things in future.
Handle with care, or you may well get sucked right in
