MUSIC EDIT
After skyrocketing to fame with her hit single ‘Supalonely’ back in 2020, New Zealand born artist BENEE has continued to prove herself as an alt-pop powerhouse in the music industry, moving from strength to strength touring the globe with artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, Tate Mcrae and Conan Gray. Some critiques online have pinned her as a one-hit-wonder, but with her sophomore album Ur An Angel I’m Just Particles released today, BENEE has more than proven she is anything but.
With their long-awaited debut album Everything Every Single Day out in the world, The Rions are stepping into a new chapter of their journey — one built on years of friendship, growth, and the infectious energy that’s made them a staple of Australia’s indie scene. The four-piece from Sydney have already won over crowds with their heartfelt lyrics and sun-drenched sound, and now they’re ready to take things to the next level. In this candid chat, the band opens up about the highs and hurdles of creating their first full-length record, the meaning behind their single “Cry,” the joy of performing live, and their hopes for what’s to come.
Sydney-based pop songstress Charley is back with her most captivating release yet. A sultry and empowering new single ‘Cherries’, marks the first chapter of her highly anticipated debut album and signals the beginning of a bold new era for the ARIA-nominated artist.
LIVE
The air was brisk on the final night of winter in Melbourne. Fitzroy was quiet, just a small handful of diners scattered throughout the low lit restaurants lining Brunswick Street. But as I neared the beloved Evelyn Hotel, a faint hum began to build. Crammed into the bandroom was an eccentric audience, young, old, bald guys, guys with man buns, loved up couples and groups of girlfriends. They waited with bated breath to finally see US singer-songwriter Medium Build perform live.
The Forum has always been one of my favourite spots to see live music, it’s big enough for an energetic crowd but also makes shows feel more intimate - the perfect recipe for a Rions show.
Melbourne based Alt-indie pop trio Telenova want to transport you to their cinematic tapestry of sound and emotion. Consisting of lead vocalist Angeline Armstrong and multinstrumentalists and producers Edward Quinn (Slum Sociable) and Joshua Moriarty (Miami Horror). Their unique sound and stunning creative vision have garnered them millions of listens across streaming platforms, headline shows around the world and have now led them back to their hometown for a sold-out night of silky vocals and celestial soundwaves.
REVIEWS
It’s the start of a new September season, and what better way to kick off a new EP - “Analysis Paralysis” by everyone’s favourite headline Australian artist MAY-A. One of the most influential rising artists who has worked with international music sensations 5 Seconds Of Summer, Flume and Wallows, MAY-A continues to be a leading force in the music industry since her debut EP “Don’t Kiss Ur Friends” back in 2021.
Worried that there have not been enough big releases from local artists recently? Well, fear not. Enter G Flip, one of Australia’s surprise musical hot properties, and their new album, the appropriately titled Drummer. I confess I knew relatively little about the Naarm / Melbourne singer & drummer when I started this review. Happily, however, that means we’re working with a blank slate, so this album can be judged more accurately on its merits in a vacuum.
Typically here at Unraveled, we like to cover (relatively) new releases, giving you a deep dive into what’s what in the local and international music and fashion scenes. This review is going to be a little different though - it’s more of a tribute to a criminally underrated and almost totally obscure album. 0151 is the debut LP of Liverpool-based indie rock group The Night Cafe, which was released in 2019.
LISTEN
Spacey Jane’s ‘If That Makes Sense’ album is a true masterpiece. From the moment the intro seamlessly flows into the album, you know that the listening experience is going to be exceptional.
